Iran Launches 'War in the Forbidden Zone' in Hormuz
Iran's Revolutionary Guard claims to have attacked 10 ships, including two U.S. vessels and eight oil tankers, in the Gulf, in retaliation for a previous U.S. attack on five Iranian oil tankers. A restricted zone near the Strait of Hormuz is now being enforced.
Iranian state media reported that the Revolutionary Guard announced in a statement on Wednesday that it had attacked two American ships and eight oil tankers in the Gulf; this was in response to what it described as a U.S. attack targeting five Iranian oil tankers.
The Revolutionary Guard stated it also targeted 10 other ships attempting to cross a region in the Strait of Hormuz it labeled as "forbidden and unsafe," according to its wording.
Days earlier, an Iranian security official said a forbidden zone would be declared outside the Strait of Hormuz in the coming days.
State media quoted Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei as saying the forbidden zone would begin at the U.S. naval blockade line and extend into areas of the Gulf, as reported by Reuters.
Rezaei warned that "any ship entering this new forbidden zone will be added to the sanctions list," according to his statement.
