The Iraqi Ministry of Oil confirmed that it is currently studying a project to extend a pipeline for exporting oil through the Syrian port of Baniyas. This initiative is part of efforts to explore alternative outlets that would support export operations and lessen dependence on existing routes.

Ministry spokesperson Salim Al-Rikabi stated that the project remains in the study phase. He clarified that its implementation is linked to a primary project starting from Basra to Haditha, followed by planning to extend a parallel pipeline to the Turkish line.

Al-Rikabi added that the project's economic and technical feasibility will be evaluated. He noted that if completed, the pipeline would serve as a substitute for the tankers currently transporting oil across Syrian territory.

He further explained that Iraq seeks to enhance flexibility in export outlets by identifying alternatives to the existing maritime ports and the Turkish outlet. This approach aims to reduce the impact of potential future crises, similar to the effects experienced during the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein discussed in Damascus on Monday with Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shar'a a project to extend an Iraqi oil pipeline passing through Syrian lands, under the sponsorship of a foreign company.
