Mali militant attacks death toll surpasses 70
A new wave of militant attacks in central Mali has raised the death toll to at least 70, according to local and security sources.

At least 70 people have been killed in a fresh wave of militant attacks in central Mali, local and security sources told AFP on Saturday. The latest assaults, for which the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) claimed responsibility on Friday, follow an earlier attack on Wednesday that left at least 30 dead in the same region.
A local official stated that the recent violence by armed groups has pushed the overall death toll above 70. Another local official put the figure at 80 dead.
Coordinated attacks and security concerns
Mali is grappling with a severe security crisis after unprecedented, coordinated attacks on April 25 and 26. During those two days, JNIM and the Azawad Liberation Front targeted positions held by the ruling military junta. A security source described the situation in the area hit by the latest attacks as "worrying."
