Pope Francis Calls for Global Action to Protect Child Migrants

Pope Francis expressed sorrow on Wednesday over the conditions endured by child migrants and refugees, calling for global action to protect children fleeing their countries in search of safety.

Speaking before thousands gathered during his weekly audience in St. Peter's Square, the Pope said child migrants "often face unspeakable suffering, violence, torture, exploitation, and traumatic conditions," according to Reuters.

"I appeal to the sense of responsibility in everyone... and urge them to show compassion toward these children who must always be protected and helped," he added.

Francis, the first Pope born in the United States, has repeatedly called for improved treatment of migrants and criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policies last year.

In April, he stated that migrants are often treated "worse than pets."

Today, Francis did not name any country, but said his call comes ahead of the Catholic Church’s World Day of Migrants and Refugees, which falls next Sunday.
