Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran, will travel to Iraq on Wednesday morning at the head of a high-level parliamentary delegation. The visit aims to hold talks on regional developments and strengthen strategic cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad.

Agenda of bilateral discussions

According to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, reporting on Tuesday, Qalibaf is scheduled to meet several senior Iraqi officials and prominent figures during the trip. Topics on the agenda include advancing bilateral relations, border security, counterterrorism efforts, expanding economic cooperation, and following up on the implementation of previously signed bilateral agreements.

Regional stability focus

The Iranian agency stated that the visit will also address joint approaches to enhancing stability and security across West Asia, as announced by Iranian authorities.

Context of Iraq-Iran ties

The delegation’s departure coincides with fluctuating Iraq-Iran relations, amid the Baghdad government’s ongoing efforts to consolidate weapons control and disarm Iranian-aligned militias operating within Iraqi territory. It also occurs against the backdrop of heightened tensions between the United States and Iran.

Qalibaf’s remarks on U.S.-Iran conflict

In new statements made on Sunday, Qalibaf asserted that the United States and Israel “failed to achieve” any of the objectives they set at the outset of their war with Iran. He described this as “the greatest and most absolute failure.”

Qalibaf claimed Iran emerged victorious by thwarting those goals, declaring: “I announce from the depths of my heart that we have triumphed in this war.”

The objectives previously outlined by the Trump administration included Iran’s full surrender, regime change, the permanent prevention of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons, and the termination of Tehran’s support for proxy groups active across the Middle East.
