Russia Expels Two Italian Diplomats Amid Espionage Allegations

Russia announced it has declared two Italian diplomats as persona non grata, describing the move as a reciprocal measure following Italy's expulsion of two Russian embassy employees.

On July 9, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated that Rome had expelled two military attachés from the Russian embassy in Italy, accusing them of involvement in espionage activities.

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry identified Vittorio Barella, the assistant defense attaché at the Italian embassy, and attaché David Dabriele as persona non grata. They were ordered to leave Russia with their families within three days.

The ministry also summoned Giovanni Scopa, the Italian chargé d'affaires ad interim, to address the expulsion of Russian embassy staff.

On Monday, Tajani wrote on X: "The Russian Federation, without cause, expelled the Italian military attaché in Moscow along with one of his aides."

He added, "This is a blatant retaliatory act in response to Italy expelling the Russian military attachés, who were caught red-handed engaging in espionage activities that harm our national security."
