Syria Reopens Deir ez-Zor International Airport After 14-Year Closure

Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport confirmed on Wednesday the resumption of operations at Deir ez-Zor International Airport after a 14-year halt. The authority stated that the airport has completed all required maintenance and rehabilitation works, enabling the restart of both domestic and international flights.

First Flights Resume

The airport received its inaugural domestic flight operated by Syrian Airlines, arriving from Damascus International Airport — marking the formal commencement of scheduled air service between the two cities. It also welcomed its first international flight, operated by Syrian Airlines and arriving from Kuwait.

Purpose of the Reopening

The authority emphasized that the reinstatement of these routes forms part of its broader strategy to expand Syria’s air route network, revive domestic air traffic, facilitate passenger movement, support economic and investment activity, and strengthen connectivity among Syrian governorates and with foreign countries.
