Syrian Airlines Launches Direct Flights to Copenhagen, Vienna on 21, 22

Syrian Airlines has expanded its direct flight network to Europe with the introduction of two new routes — to Copenhagen and Vienna — launching Monday, 21 September and Tuesday, 22 September respectively. The additions bring the carrier’s total number of direct European destinations to three, including its existing service to Amsterdam.

Launch dates and strategic context

Omar Al-Husri, head of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, confirmed that flights to Copenhagen commence on 21 September, while services to Vienna begin the following day, 22 September. He described the move as part of a broader plan to develop Syrian Airlines’ route structure and broaden direct air connectivity between Syria and Europe.

Impact on passenger options and transit reliance

Al-Husri stated that operating these two new destinations will increase travel choices for passengers, particularly Syrians residing in Europe. The direct services are expected to reduce dependence on connecting hubs, thereby shortening overall journey times and lowering associated travel costs.

He noted that the introduction of any new international destination requires completion of a set of regulatory and operational requirements. These include securing necessary approvals, coordinating with aviation authorities and airport operators, and finalising technical and commercial arrangements, as well as ground handling and airport service provisions — all aimed at ensuring operational readiness and continuity.

Al-Husri added that work continues on adding further European and regional destinations. Announcements regarding additional routes will be made sequentially, following the fulfilment of the specific requirements for each.
