The Tuareg Seize Strategic Tessalit Camp in Northern Mali

The field situation in Mali witnessed a dramatic shift following the control of "Tuareg" fighters over the strategic Tessalit camp in the heart of northern Mali. This control came after the withdrawal of the Malian army and its allies from Russian armed groups from their positions on Friday morning, in a move described by field sources as having occurred without direct clashes, leading to the fall of one of the most important military bases into the hands of the "Azawad Liberation Front" after a series of coordinated attacks targeting the ruling military junta's positions in recent days.

Field Alliances and Increasing Pressure on Bamako

This field advance by the Tuareg coincides with a parallel political and military escalation, as armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda have called for the formation of a united front aimed at toppling the military junta that has held power since 2020. The threat was not limited to northern military positions but extended to the capital Bamako, where these groups began imposing a land blockade on the main roads leading to it, threatening to isolate the country's political center from its strategic surroundings and vital army strongholds.

Air Intervention by Sahel Countries to Attempt Restoring Balance

In contrast to this expansion of armed factions, the government of Niger announced that the unified force comprising Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger launched intense airstrikes targeting rebel positions in the north. Despite this air intervention, the fall of the Tessalit camp remains a strong indicator of the fragility of the security situation and the ability of separatist factions to impose a new reality on the ground, placing the region before open conflict scenarios amid fears of deteriorating humanitarian conditions and the widening scope of armed confrontations in the African Sahel region.
