Trump Discusses Military Alliance and Oil with UK PM Burnham

US President Donald Trump stated that he had a "very good conversation" with the new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and mentioned plans to meet him "in the near future."

Burnham assumed office on Monday as Britain's seventh prime minister in a decade, pledging to reshape British policy by introducing a new economic model and reviving a nation "tired" of frequent leadership changes.

Trump posted on the social media platform Truth Social that their discussion included North Sea oil, trade, military alliance, mine clearance in the Strait of Hormuz, and several other topics. He described the call as "interesting" and said it went well.

He added that they would meet soon to discuss issues important to both countries, without specifying a date for the meeting.

Trump criticized the former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, as well as on matters related to immigration, energy, and technology sector regulation.

Burnham's office stated that he assured Trump of London's commitment to defense and security and pledged support for the safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which has effectively remained closed since the start of the war, causing energy prices to rise.

Relations between Trump and Starmer had become strained after Britain initially rejected a US request to use British bases for strikes against Iran, although Starmer later authorized US use of the bases.

At the end of last month, Trump said he knew little about Burnham, describing him as "very liberal" and someone unlikely to open the North Sea for further oil exploration.
