President Trump announced a cut to the 18-cent federal gas tax for an unspecified period amid rising fuel prices due to the Iran war.

President Donald Trump said Monday he will reduce the 18-cent federal gasoline tax for an unspecified duration, as fuel prices climb across the United States amid the war with Iran. The suspension requires congressional approval, and legislation must pass through a chamber currently controlled by Trump's fellow Republicans, according to Reuters.
When asked by reporters about the tax suspension, Trump replied, "Yes, I will cut it." Pressed in the Oval Office on how long the suspension would last, he answered, "Until it becomes appropriate."
Republican Senator Josh Holl stated on platform X that he will introduce legislation Monday to suspend the gas tax. Trump told CBS in an interview that no airline bailout has been proposed and that the sector's condition is "not bad."
Energy Secretary Chris Wright told NBC News on Sunday that the Trump administration is open to suspending the federal gas tax.
Several U.S. states also impose their own gasoline taxes, but Indiana, Kentucky, and Georgia have already taken steps to reduce them to ease the burden on consumers at the pump. Gas prices have risen since the Iran war began on February 28, with American Automobile Association data showing the average gallon cost $4.52 on Monday.
