Trump: US Constitution Bars Me From Running for a Third Presidential Term
US President Donald Trump acknowledged that the Constitution prohibits him from seeking a third term, though he expressed willingness to run again if given the opportunity.

US President Donald Trump acknowledged that the Constitution does not allow him to run for a third presidential term, while expressing his desire to contest elections again if the opportunity arose.
Trump said in an interview with the "New York Post": "I would gladly run if I had the chance, but the wording is very clear," referring to the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution.
The US President added that he has two more years in the White House, considering it a long period during which much can be accomplished.
Trump's remarks come after he announced at a rally in Iowa on October 22 that he believes he has the right to run again, based on his claim that Democrats rigged the results of the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to Joe Biden.
At that time, Trump said he had studied constitutional restrictions for a long time and acknowledged that their wording is clear and leaves little room for maneuvering, but he added that he considers himself empowered to run again due to what he described as manipulation of the 2020 election results.
The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified in 1951, prohibits any person from being elected to the office of President more than twice, regardless of whether the two terms are consecutive or separate.
Trump held the presidency between 2017 and 2021, before returning to the White House in January 2025, with his current term set to end in January 2029.
