Trump's Signature Debuts on New $100 Bill, Marking First Presidential Autograph on US Currency
President Donald Trump has introduced a new $100 bill featuring his signature, marking the first time a sitting president's autograph appears on US currency.

President Donald Trump has initiated an unprecedented move by releasing an image of a new $100 bill bearing his signature. This follows months after the US Treasury announced that, for the first time, the signature of a sitting president would be included on American paper currency.
In March, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the US administration planned to feature Trump's signature on the currency to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States' founding. The image shared by Trump displays his signature positioned above that of Bessent.
Historically, the $100 bill has carried the signatures of the Treasury Secretary and the Treasurer of the United States, but never that of the current president. Treasury Secretary Brandon Beach commented, "The president's imprint on history as the architect of America's economic renaissance during its golden age cannot be denied. Placing his signature on US currency is not only appropriate but fully deserved."
Trump has made it a personal initiative to have his name and image featured on a wide array of American documents and landmarks. His administration has placed his photo or name, or both, on a commemorative US passport, national park entry permits, signs outside various Washington, DC agencies, cultural institutions such as the US Institute of Peace, special investment accounts for children, and the state of Florida renamed Palm Beach International Airport in his honor.
Some members of Congress have attempted to extend this effort by proposing legislation to feature Trump's image on a commemorative $250 bill. However, this prospect faces significant challenges due to the need for support from Democratic senators.
US law currently stipulates that only deceased individuals may have their images on US currency and securities. The bill introduced in the House of Representatives seeks to create an exception for individuals who are serving or have served as president of the United States.
Earlier this year, staff at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing prepared prototypes of a $250 bill featuring Trump's image and signature. At a White House press conference in May, Bessent told CNN that he saw "nothing inappropriate" about placing Trump's image on US currency.
Bessent stated, "I do not believe there is anything inappropriate about having the president of the United States on a commemorative currency for the 250th anniversary."
