Israeli Channel 12 reports a growing rift between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir over potential military actions against Iran, amid fears of political exploitation before elections.

Israeli Channel 12 revealed an escalating dispute between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, stemming from a move linked to Iran that is feared could lead to a rapid military confrontation, amid concerns within the military establishment about exploiting the Iranian file for political gains ahead of elections.
According to the report, published on Sunday evening, tensions peaked during the past twenty-four hours after Zamir received directives from the political level regarding executing a move linked to the Iranian file, but he requested an in-depth discussion before implementation, along with obtaining written and signed legal approvals from the political level.
The report quoted a security source stating that the move could lead to a quick confrontation with Iran at a sensitive time, warning of the possibility of a miscalculation.
Fears of politicizing the Iranian file
The report indicated that the tension between Netanyahu and Zamir also surfaced during a meeting held today at Palmachim base, where two sources described the atmosphere as highly tense.
According to informed sources, the military establishment harbors fears that the political level might try to leverage the Iranian file to strengthen its political standing before the elections. In contrast, political officials denied these accusations, with one describing the claims as "outright lies."
Netanyahu: There is no dispute with the Chief of Staff
For his part, Netanyahu denied any dispute with Zamir regarding the Iranian file, stating: "There is no dispute."
He added that some are trying to divert attention from the fact that the Chief of Staff himself said Iran is attempting to influence the elections, according to his statements.
This tension comes, according to the report, against the backdrop of fears regarding the repercussions of any military action against Iran in the current phase, and what it may entail in terms of security escalation at a politically sensitive time within Israel.
