The US military command for Latin America and the Caribbean, SOUTHCOM, announced the killing of two men in an airstrike targeting a boat suspected of drug trafficking in the eastern Pacific. With this incident, the total number of deaths in this controversial campaign rises to 187 people.
SOUTHCOM explained, in a statement published on the platform X, that the targeted boat was using routes commonly used in drug trafficking operations in the Caribbean region, and was already engaged in drug trafficking activities at the time of the strike last Monday.
US military officials had previously announced that their forces carried out eight strikes of this type during the past month of April alone. According to a tally prepared by the AFP news agency, the total number of deaths from these operations has reached at least 187 people.
The administration of US President Donald Trump has not provided any conclusive evidence proving the involvement of the targeted boats in what it describes as "drug-related terrorism," which has sparked widespread debate over the legitimacy of these military operations.
Experts and UN officials have described these strikes as "executions without trials," increasing the intensity of criticism directed at US drug policy.
