UK Health Minister Quits to Challenge Starmer for Labour Leadership
Wes Streeting resigns as UK health minister and announces a bid to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for the Labour Party leadership.

Wes Streeting has resigned as Britain’s health minister and declared his intention to run for the leadership of the Labour Party, directly challenging Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The move marks an unprecedented escalation in internal party tensions.
In his resignation letter to Starmer on Thursday, published by the Telegraph, Streeting wrote: “Where we need vision, there is a void. Where we need direction, there is confusion.” He argued that the party urgently requires “a debate about what comes next—a battle of ideas, not a petty fight over personalities and factional squabbles,” and called on Starmer to facilitate such a discussion.
Streeting went further, listing a series of “mistakes” he believes contributed to the Labour Party’s historic losses in local elections last week. Among these, he cited the decision to cut winter fuel payments, a policy outlined in Starmer’s so-called “Isle of Strangers” speech.
Starmer’s Stance Unchanged
The prime minister, however, appears determined to hold his ground, insisting he will not step aside if his leadership is challenged. When asked about the possibility of Streeting entering the race, a spokesperson for Starmer replied that “the position has not changed since it was stated on Monday.”
