UN Security Council Calls for De-escalation in Yemen and Protection of Civilians

On Tuesday, members of the United Nations Security Council called for de-escalation and the resumption of dialogue amid the worsening civil war in Yemen.

During an emergency meeting in New York, UN Under-Secretary-General Khalid Khizar said the situation in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and surrounding areas has become increasingly unstable in recent days.

Khizar added that fighting has intensified along Yemen’s western coast, with Houthi forces advancing toward the strait and declaring control over several islands in the southern Red Sea.

He noted that the fighting has forced civilians to flee their homes and placed additional strain on humanitarian operations already under pressure.

He said at least 125,000 people have been displaced across Yemen since the start of the month. During the same period, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reported eight deaths and 32 injuries.

The UN stated that the fighting has spread beyond Yemen’s borders, with reports of Houthis’ militia attacks in Saudi Arabia.

Khizar said: "We call on all parties to protect civilians, respect international humanitarian law, and facilitate safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid so that urgently needed assistance can reach vulnerable communities."

He added: "What is now required is sustained engagement to reduce tensions, prevent further escalation, and protect freedom of navigation. The parties in Yemen should prioritize dialogue and engage constructively in UN-led efforts to achieve a political solution through negotiation."

Bahrain, Denmark, France, Greece, Latvia, and the United Kingdom requested the emergency meeting.

In addition to representatives from the 15 member states of the UN’s most powerful body, the meeting was also attended by representatives from Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
