U.S. Approves Arms Deal with Ukraine to Develop Air Defense Systems

The U.S. Department of State announced on Saturday that the United States has approved a $2.7 billion arms deal for Ukraine, aimed at developing air defense systems and supplying related equipment and services.

The department said in the notification that if the deal is finalized, Ukraine will finance the purchase through a mix of European contributions and U.S. foreign military financing allocated during the previous administration of President Joe Biden.

Foreign military financing provides assistance in the form of grants, enabling countries to purchase defense equipment and weapons produced in the United States.

The Department of State stated, "Foreign military financing will be counted as a U.S. capital contribution to Ukraine's investment fund for reconstruction through a one-to-one repayment mechanism."

The U.S.-Ukraine Investment Fund for Reconstruction was established under a minerals agreement signed between the United States and Ukraine last year.

The Department of State said the package includes simulated S-300 missiles, JAM-67 missiles, extended-range laser-guided air defense missile systems, bomb modification kits, mobile launch systems, radars for drone countermeasures, and other weapon systems.

The proposed deal remains subject to congressional review, according to Reuters.

President Donald Trump had previously claimed he would end the Russia-Ukraine war upon taking office early last year, but the goal remains distant after 20 months of his presidency.

Earlier Friday, Trump signed a comprehensive bill imposing sanctions on Russia into law, paving the way for increased economic pressure on Moscow.

Earlier this month, Trump said he would ask European nations to repay the value of military aid and ammunition the United States previously sent to Ukraine.
