An American defense company introduced the Buckler, a supersonic interceptor missile designed to efficiently and affordably counter hostile drone swarms.

An American defense company has revealed a new supersonic interception system aimed at addressing the growing threat posed by hostile drones. This development seeks to offer a more efficient and cost-effective method to counter attacks from swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles.
The system, named "Buckler," was developed by X-Bow Systems, a Texas-based company specializing in solid rocket motors, launch technologies, and defense systems. The company confirmed that Buckler successfully passed flight and field tests, bringing it closer to operational deployment.
Buckler is designed to intercept Group 3 unmanned aerial vehicles, which weigh between 56 and 1,320 pounds, operate below 18,000 feet in altitude, and fly at speeds not exceeding 250 knots. These drones are typically used for reconnaissance and strike missions.
The company emphasized that the system combines high speed with a design suitable for mass production, enabling military forces to counter repeated drone attacks at a lower cost compared to traditional defense systems.
With the increased use of drones in modern conflicts, low-cost drone swarms have become a significant challenge for air defense systems. Experts note that employing expensive interceptor missiles against such threats is not a sustainable approach.
In response, X-Bow Systems developed the Buckler interceptor missile, which costs less than $100,000 to produce. Recent flight tests have demonstrated the propulsion system's efficiency and overall performance. These tests also included static firing of the solid rocket motor and ignition system.
The company utilizes an integrated manufacturing model, producing both the missile's structure and solid rocket motor in-house. This approach provides greater quality control, reduces reliance on external suppliers, and streamlines supply chains.
X-Bow Systems noted that the shortage of solid rocket motors has become an increasing challenge for defense industries amid rising global demand for missiles and munitions. Internal production allows for accelerated manufacturing rates and quicker fulfillment of military needs.
Jason Hundley, founder and CEO of X-Bow Systems, stated that relying on interceptor missiles costing millions of dollars to counter drones valued at only thousands is not a sustainable strategy.
He added, "The Buckler project has already flown, costs less than $100,000, and we manufacture its structure and motor ourselves. This is our response to the needs of the United States and its allies for an effective, low-cost, and widely producible defensive capability."
The Buckler system was officially unveiled at the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom, where it was presented to military officials and clients, according to the defence-industry website.
X-Bow Systems plans to showcase the system again at the 2026 Space and Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama, as part of efforts to expand cooperation with potential defense partners.
Separately, the Erbil Airport in Iraq has temporarily suspended flights, according to agency reports.
