At the I/O 2026 conference, Google revealed its inaugural smart glasses equipped with artificial intelligence, capable of translating spoken language instantly.

The tech giant stated that the development of these glasses involved collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm. They operate on Android XR, an operating system designed specifically for wearable devices and augmented reality headsets. Sales are expected to commence in fall 2026, although no precise launch date was provided.

The glasses incorporate the Gemini AI assistant, which users can activate by saying "Hey Google" or through a simple touch. Despite featuring cameras, speakers, and microphones, the glasses do not have displays on the lenses; instead, information is conveyed privately to the wearer’s ear via audio.

This device offers immediate translation for both spoken words and text visible through the camera lens. For example, in Tokyo, a user can look at a menu written in Japanese, and the Gemini assistant will translate it directly, delivering the translation audibly to the user. The technology also functions during live conversations, where a person speaks in a different language and the user hears the translation through the integrated speakers. Google has not yet disclosed the list of supported languages, but given the capabilities of Google Translate, a wide range of languages is anticipated.

Among its notable features, the glasses can analyze what the user sees in real time, such as restaurant reviews or explanations of unclear traffic signs.

They also provide voice navigation based on camera input, allowing users to add stops or search for nearby cafes.

Additional functionalities include managing calls, messages, and music, as well as capturing photos and videos, which can be manipulated using the Nano Banana AI engine.
