OpenAI and Google have unveiled a new advanced system designed to verify the origin of images and differentiate authentic photos from those generated by artificial intelligence. This initiative aims to address the accelerating proliferation of AI-created images and restore trust in digital content across the internet.

The system integrates multiple technologies simultaneously. It employs the C2PA standard, which embeds metadata within images to specify their source and creation method. Concurrently, Google utilizes its SynthID technology, embedding an invisible watermark inside the image itself, making it more resistant to removal or manipulation.

This combination of embedded metadata and invisible watermarks is intended to establish a stronger protective layer that prevents the undetected spread of fake images.

As part of this development, OpenAI is preparing to launch a public verification tool enabling users to upload any image to check for indicators of AI generation. However, the company notes that this tool is not fully definitive, as some images may lose their metadata or may not yet be supported by all AI systems.

The collaboration between OpenAI and Google marks a significant step toward a more transparent internet environment. Nonetheless, it does not represent a final solution. With ongoing advancements in image generation technologies, the core challenge remains establishing a unified global system that ensures trustworthiness in digital visual content.
