Chi Xu, CEO of Xreal, a Google partner in the smart glasses sector, stated that the company is close to mastering the challenging smart glasses industry, which has historically struggled with profitability despite heavy investment.

Xu shared these insights during Google’s I/O conference in Mountain View, where Xreal showcased its latest product, Project Aura, a new set of extended reality (XR) glasses designed for practical everyday use.

Challenges and Industry Progress

For years, smart glasses have faced significant obstacles, including bulky designs, discomfort, and limited software appeal. Xu acknowledged these difficulties, emphasizing the complexity of developing successful smart glasses.

Industry insiders, including Xu, now believe the market is approaching a turning point, partly influenced by Meta’s 2023 collaboration with Ray-Ban, which produced one of the first commercially successful smart glasses lines, despite Reality Labs operating at a substantial loss.

Features of Xreal’s Project Aura

Xreal’s Aura model features wired smart glasses equipped with OLED displays embedded in the lenses, enabling users to watch high-definition videos directly within the frames. The glasses connect to a “puck,” a compact, phone-sized computing device that powers the experience and can be carried in a pocket.

This setup allows users to access a range of applications, such as an immersive Google Maps app, virtual reality YouTube videos, and a painting app that uses hand tracking to create private holographic images. Additional functionalities include games controlled by hand gestures and basic web browsing.

Use Cases and Market Strategy

The company promotes Aura as suitable for various scenarios, including following floating recipes while cooking, establishing private workspaces in public places, or viewing movies on a virtual large screen at home.

Xu envisions the glasses serving not only casual consumers but also professionals who might use them for work in settings like coffee shops. Currently, the glasses are available only to developers, with commercial availability planned for later this year.

Financial Outlook and Future Plans

Xreal is preparing for an initial public offering expected before the end of 2026, although Xu provided limited details on this development. The company is focused on improving its financial performance by increasing gross margins and reducing marketing and sales expenses.

Xu expressed optimism that the company could achieve break-even status in the coming year, marking a significant milestone in the smart glasses market.
