Fifty-five members of the European Parliament have called for an official and urgent investigation into the direct intervention of US President Donald Trump in the controversy surrounding the lifting of the suspension on American striker Folarin Balogun. They consider this incident a blatant violation that requires thorough review by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).

According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, these European Parliament members urged national football associations within EU member states to pressure FIFA to initiate an extensive inquiry. The investigation should determine the extent of FIFA President Gianni Infantino's involvement in the decision to suspend Balogun's penalty and examine the nature of the American political pressures influencing the decision-making process.

FIFA Regulations and Political Neutrality Under Scrutiny

In a strongly worded joint letter, the parliamentarians emphasized that FIFA’s regulations and code of ethics explicitly require adherence to the principle of political neutrality. They also mandate that member associations act immediately to hold FIFA officials accountable if there is any suspicion of violating these established rules and principles.

This initiative is led by prominent members of the European Parliament representing the Netherlands, Denmark, and Ireland, and has received the support of 55 parliamentarians so far. These actions come amid increasing demands for an official investigation to clarify the circumstances behind the controversial decision to lift the suspension of the American striker, a penalty that was controversially dropped, allowing him to participate in the crucial Round of 16 match against Belgium in the World Cup finals.
