Arsenal and PSG Chase West Ham's Fernandes
Arsenal and PSG lead the race to sign West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with relegation potentially forcing a sale.

Two of Europe's biggest clubs, Premier League leaders Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, are at the front of the queue to sign West Ham's Mateus Fernandes. The 21-year-old midfielder could be available for transfer if the Hammers are relegated from the top flight, a scenario that looks increasingly likely with just two games remaining in the season.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has made the Portuguese youngster a primary target for the summer window, according to The Times. Arteta is looking to add technical depth to his midfield as his squad prepares for a Champions League final against PSG and pushes for a domestic title. Fernandes is seen as a versatile option, capable of playing as a holding midfielder, a box-to-box engine, or in a more advanced creative role.
Direct Encounter and Recruitment Focus
Fernandes faced Arsenal directly on Sunday in a 1-0 defeat at the London Stadium. He had a golden chance to put West Ham ahead but took too many touches, allowing goalkeeper David Raya to make a crucial save. Despite that miss, his technical qualities have impressed Arsenal's recruitment team, who are prioritizing younger players with proven Premier League experience following their Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City in March.
Paris Saint-Germain are also closely monitoring Fernandes, joining the race for his signature. Interest in the 21-year-old is nothing new; before his £38 million move from Southampton, he was pursued by 10 different clubs, including Atletico Madrid. The competition suggests a bidding war could erupt this summer.
Relegation Threat and Financial Pressure
West Ham find themselves in a difficult negotiating position due to their league standing. The club occupies 18th place with 36 points, two points adrift of safety with two rounds of fixtures left. If Nuno Espirito Santo's side fail to beat the drop, the club will face immense pressure to sell high-value assets to remain within financial regulations. A drop in revenue would necessitate the departure of top earners, making Fernandes a likely candidate for a summer exit.
Fernandes signed a five-year deal with an option for an extra season, but the structure includes a 15 per cent sell-on clause for Southampton and various add-ons. This means West Ham will need a significant fee to see any major profit from a sale.
Arsenal's Midfield Restructuring
The pursuit of Fernandes is part of a wider overhaul at the Emirates. Several departures are expected to make room for new arrivals. Christian Norgaard is one player likely to be shown the door after failing to secure a regular spot since his move from Brentford. Arteta has often preferred Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi, leaving Norgaard with just 56 minutes of Premier League action this season.
Fernandes has registered five goals and four assists in 40 appearances during his debut season at the London Stadium.
