Barcelona has initiated formal negotiations to acquire Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, intensifying competition for the English international's transfer.

Barcelona has officially entered the race to sign Anthony Gordon, the forward for Newcastle United, adding excitement to what appears to be one of the most prominent battles in the transfer market for the English international.
Bayern Munich, the German league champions, had shown serious interest in bringing the 25-year-old player to Germany. However, recent reports confirm that the Catalan giant has already started discussions with Newcastle's management.
Since joining Newcastle from Everton in a deal worth £45 million in January 2023, Gordon has maintained consistent performance over two consecutive seasons, fueling ongoing speculation about his future.
The list of clubs interested in the young star extends beyond the Spanish and German powerhouses, with Liverpool also among the regular admirers of Gordon's abilities.
The bidding war among Europe's elite clubs is expected to significantly increase Gordon's market value, currently estimated at around £75 million, potentially pushing it to new record levels.
Gordon played a key role in Newcastle's resurgence, forming a formidable attacking trio alongside his former teammate Alexander Isak—who transferred to Liverpool last summer in a historic £130 million deal—and Jacob Murphy.
His exceptional performances were instrumental in Newcastle's historic victory in the 2024-2025 Carabao Cup, ending a 70-year drought for major domestic trophies.
Gordon also contributed significantly to Newcastle's qualification for this year's UEFA Champions League, despite missing the cup final due to suspension.
This season, however, the situation has changed. Despite scoring 17 goals, including 10 in continental competitions and a goal against Barcelona itself, Gordon's on-field influence has diminished amid increasing transfer rumors.
Newcastle's head coach, Eddie Howe, decided to exclude Gordon from the squad immediately after his return from injury, citing the "need to focus on the club's future." This move strengthened the belief among many that Gordon's time at St James' Park is limited and that his departure is only a matter of time.
Gordon has missed Newcastle's last six Premier League matches amid speculation about his future but has retained his place in England's national team squad selected by Thomas Tuchel for the World Cup.
He is expected to compete with Marcus Rashford, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona, for the left-wing position in England's starting lineup during the upcoming tournament.
Gordon also participated in Euro 2024 under Gareth Southgate, though he only made a brief substitute appearance during England's run to the final, where the Three Lions were defeated by Spain.
The England team hopes to advance further this time, while Gordon aims to make a significant impact on the global stage despite the uncertainty surrounding his club future.
