Dembele, 34, broke his silence on the Ballon d’Or controversy after Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-0 win, delivering a pointed response to Kylian Mbappe’s remarks from the 26 October ceremony. “I was always like that: at the back of the class, worked hard,” he said, adding, “Since the start of my career, I have not said a word about it. He had a different path, injuries, but he made up for that well.”

Former PSG professional Jerome Rothen told RMC Sport that Dembele is “furious with Mbappe. For him, it is a form of cheating. That is a strong word, but that is exactly how he sees it.” Rothen added that the sentiment extends beyond Dembele: “Everyone around Ousmane, the people in the PSG dressing room,” share the anger. He also cited broader unease within the France national team, referencing “the feeling we had at the World Cup” and stating, “There were many players who had a problem with Mbappe’s behaviour and his comments. That is the truth. He alienated many people in the French team.”

Rothen speculated that Mbappe’s comments may deepen existing fractures, predicting that “two camps” will now emerge. “I think the walls [during the next international break] will shake a little,” he said.

In addition to Mbappe and Dembele, Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Rodri — both Spanish world champions — are considered viable candidates. Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane is also among the favourites.
