FA launches probe into Southampton over spying on Championship rivals
The FA has initiated an investigation into Southampton for spying on three Championship clubs, following EFL sanctions that expelled them from the play-offs and deducted points.

Southampton are under investigation by the Football Association after admitting to spying on the training sessions of three Championship opponents within the forbidden 72-hour period before matches.
FA inquiry follows EFL sanctions
The Football Association confirmed it has opened a disciplinary investigation into Southampton’s involvement in the Championship ‘spygate’ scandal. This development comes after the English Football League imposed severe punishments on the club, including expulsion from the Championship play-offs and a four-point deduction for the next season.
Southampton’s removal from the play-offs led to Middlesbrough being reinstated to face Hull City at Wembley, after originally being eliminated in the semi-finals. The club appealed the EFL’s sanctions, calling them “disproportionate,” but the appeal was rejected on Wednesday evening.
Details of the spying allegations
The controversy began when a Southampton first-team analyst intern was reportedly caught filming a Middlesbrough training session before the first leg of the play-off semi-final. Middlesbrough filed a formal complaint with the EFL, which subsequently uncovered similar incidents involving Oxford United and Ipswich Town.
Southampton were found to have violated Regulation 3.4, which mandates clubs to act with “utmost good faith” towards each other, and Regulation 127, prohibiting the observation of opposition training sessions within three days prior to a fixture.
FA’s next steps and potential consequences
An FA spokesperson stated on Thursday that the governing body “won't comment further until we have assessed the evidence.” The FA’s disciplinary process will review the full findings and documents from the EFL’s independent disciplinary commission to determine if further sanctions or suspensions are warranted against individuals at Southampton.
The club now faces the possibility of additional disciplinary measures, while preparing to start the next Championship season with a four-point penalty after failing to overturn the EFL ruling.
Impact on players and club
The sanctions have had significant repercussions within the Southampton squad. Players are confronting substantial financial losses due to missing out on potential Premier League promotion, including bonuses and wage increases linked to top-flight football.
Several squad members have reportedly reached out to the Professional Footballers' Association to explore legal and financial options following the collapse of the club’s promotion hopes.
