Luis de la Fuente Signs Two-Year Extension as Spain Head Coach

Spain’s national football team head coach Luis de la Fuente has formally agreed to a two-year extension of his contract, the Spanish Football Federation confirmed on Wednesday.

Federation president Rafael Louzán announced the decision during the World Football Summit, stating that the new agreement will keep de la Fuente in charge through 2030. His prior contract was scheduled to conclude after Euro 2028.

World Cup Success Drives Renewal

De la Fuente led “La Roja” to victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, held recently in the United States. The triumph served as the central catalyst for the renewal talks, which both parties agreed to resume after the summer break.

Louzán emphasized de la Fuente’s record and conduct, saying: “His results speak for themselves, and his work ethic speaks for itself... and the public loves and appreciates him.” He added: “I offered him a contract extension because he was not among the top ten in terms of salary. He will be. We are in the process of finalising the agreement so that he can stay for a few more years. He has spent 14 years here, and I want him to end his career here.”

Salary Restructuring and Strategic Timing

According to the Spanish sports daily AS, the updated deal includes a restructuring of de la Fuente’s salary in acknowledgment of his achievements, positioning him among the highest-paid national team coaches globally.

The extension carries particular significance given Spain’s co-hosting role for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The agreement’s expiry aligns directly with that tournament’s main match schedule.

Nations League Squad Announcement Imminent

The announcement comes two days before de la Fuente is set to name his first squad under the renewed mandate for the UEFA Nations League A campaign.

The squad will convene on Tuesday 22 September. Four matches are scheduled: England versus Spain on Saturday 26 September at Wembley Stadium; Spain versus Croatia on Tuesday 29 September at the Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium in Seville; Spain versus the Czech Republic on Saturday 3 October at the Carlos Tartiere Stadium in Oviedo; and Croatia versus Spain on Tuesday 6 October at the Poljud Stadium in Split.
