Manchester United Advances on Ederson Transfer Despite Medical Concerns
Manchester United remains committed to signing Ederson from Atalanta, despite medical concerns and delays caused by his World Cup call-up.

Manchester United has agreed on a £39 million transfer fee with Atalanta for midfielder Ederson, prioritizing the Brazilian player over other interested clubs after months of speculation.
United's pursuit of Ederson intensifies
Ederson, 27, has been linked with Manchester United since 2023, but Atalanta’s initial £70 million valuation stalled any progress. The Serie A club later softened its stance due to the player’s contract expiring in twelve months, reigniting United’s interest this summer.
Alongside Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Arsenal have shown interest, with several Italian clubs also monitoring the midfielder. United maintained close contact with Ederson’s representatives while monitoring his performance this season.
INEOS reportedly moved swiftly to secure the transfer, engaging in talks with Atletico Madrid, who were also negotiating a deal.
Transfer developments and delays
The agreement between Manchester United and Atalanta was reached in early June, with Ederson prepared to travel to England for medical examinations and to finalize the contract. However, his recent call-up by Brazil’s manager Ancelotti for the World Cup, replacing right-back Wesley, has postponed these plans.
Manchester United is seeking final assurances before completing the transfer, including conducting additional medical tests despite a prior examination last month. Reports from Brazil suggested the deal might have stalled, although club officials denied these claims last weekend.
The Daily Mail reported that concerns arose during the initial medical, potentially explaining the renewed scrutiny. Conversely, TEAMtalk stated that Manchester United is continuing to pursue the signing and that the transfer remains on schedule despite rumors of collapse.
A source cited by TEAMtalk confirmed, “There are no issues with the Ederson move. He is due for a medical in England as soon as is logistically possible, and that will all be confirmed in due course, but the move is very much in place and still on.”
Parallel transfer activity and squad strategy
Simultaneously, Manchester United has reached a £50 million agreement with Chelsea to acquire Andrey Santos, another Brazilian midfielder. Santos, 22, is expected to travel to Manchester soon for his medical, having not participated in the World Cup.
Speculation had suggested that United might prioritize Santos over Ederson due to their similar playing styles, but the club appears set to finalize Ederson’s signing after completing Santos’s transfer.
The recent injury to Manuel Ugarte, which is expected to sideline him until well into next year, likely influenced United’s decision to strengthen their midfield with two combative players. Santos is versatile, capable of playing both as a defensive midfielder (No.6) and a box-to-box midfielder (No.8), and is considered by many in Brazil as a future successor to Casemiro.
Manchester United’s pursuit of Aurelien Tchouameni, regarded as an ideal replacement for Casemiro, has ended as the Real Madrid midfielder is set to renew his contract. However, the club is reportedly focusing on one of Tchouameni’s French teammates as a potential third midfield signing.
