Former Manchester United star and current pundit Gary Neville has offered a nuanced take on Mohamed Salah's explosive social media statement after Liverpool's 4-2 loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League, acknowledging both the frustration of supporters and the unique license afforded to world-class players.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said he could see the situation from both sides. "I don't think I would see it this way if it were an ordinary player," he explained. "But when you have a player of this level of talent, experience, and success—like Mohamed Salah, whom I rank among the best in the world—sometimes you have to accept what he did."

Salah's comments were widely interpreted as a veiled criticism of Dutch manager Arne Slot's tactics. The Egyptian wrote on his official social media accounts: "Our collapse again with another defeat this season was painful. Our fans do not deserve that. I want to see Liverpool return to its strong attacking style that terrifies opponents, and return to winning titles."

He added: "Winning some matches here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win matches. Liverpool will always be a club that means so much to me and my family. I want to see it succeed, even long after I leave."

Neville did not shy away from criticizing the timing and delivery of Salah's outburst. "I understand why Liverpool fans felt angry. I myself said during commentary that the substitution was necessary, and that Liverpool needed to attack—and they did score after that. But Salah said what he said, and the way he spoke and the timing... it was a mistake. He pulled the pin out of the grenade and threw it into the middle of the room."

The former England international drew a comparison to his own club allegiance. "If this player were from Manchester United, I would be very angry. But because of his level and his history, this kind of behavior is not unusual for players of this caliber. They see things differently."

Liverpool's defeat at Villa Park marked another setback in a season that has seen the Reds struggle for consistency. Salah's public call for a return to an aggressive, title-winning identity has sparked debate among fans and pundits alike about the direction of the team under Slot.
