Real Madrid is aware of the urgent need to execute a substantial squad overhaul in the upcoming summer transfer window after two seasons without securing major titles. However, the club's rebuilding efforts are hindered by the reluctance of several players to depart from the team.

Players at Real Madrid benefit from high salaries and lucrative contracts, coupled with the global prestige associated with wearing the jersey of Europe's most decorated club. This combination enhances their market value and significantly boosts their endorsement earnings, leading many players to prefer remaining at the club even when their chances of regular playtime diminish.

Dani Ceballos exemplifies this situation. In the summer of 2025, he was close to transferring to Olympique Marseille after reaching an agreement with Real Madrid. Nevertheless, he withdrew at the last moment and chose to stay at Santiago Bernabéu despite knowing that securing consistent playing minutes would be challenging.

This season, Ceballos played only 826 minutes. Sources close to the player revealed that the salary offered by the French club was lower than what he currently earns in Madrid, influencing his decision to reject the move. Although coach Álvaro Arbeloa recently excluded him from the squad, Ceballos was granted limited minutes in the last match, a gesture interpreted as a possible farewell.

Real Madrid aims to facilitate his departure this summer, while the player’s aspiration remains to return to Real Betis, although no final agreement has been reached yet.

Eduardo Camavinga is also among the candidates for departure following a disappointing season where he failed to show the expected progress since joining Real Madrid. Fans have repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with his declining performance, and the club’s management considers that he still holds significant market value that could yield substantial profits if sold. Nonetheless, sources close to Camavinga confirm that he has no intention of leaving the club.

The list of players potentially leaving includes Ferland Mendy, who refused to leave in 2023 despite the club signing a replacement for his position, and Fran García, who may seek more playing time due to competition at left-back. Ibrahim Díaz shows no desire to depart despite limited appearances, while the club plans to loan out Franco Mastantuono after a modest first season.

Gonzalo García appears to be the most likely to leave, with Real Madrid intending to retain a percentage of his rights or include a buy-back clause for a future reacquisition.

Real Madrid no longer operates as the club that generates massive profits from selling star players as it did in the past. The last major sale occurred in the summer of 2022 when Casemiro transferred to Manchester United for 70 million euros.

Before that, the club sold Raphaël Varane and Martin Ødegaard for 40 million euros each, as well as Achraf Hakimi to Inter Milan for 43 million euros. This contrasts sharply with previous years when the club earned enormous sums from selling top stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo for 100 million euros, Álvaro Morata for 80 million euros, Ángel Di María for 75 million euros, and Mesut Özil for 45 million euros. These revenues later enabled Real Madrid to renew its squad and return strongly to European title contention.
