Slot explains Liverpool’s defensive collapse against Aston Villa
Liverpool manager Arne Slot admits his team concedes too many easy goals after a 4-2 loss to Aston Villa, dropping them to fifth place.

Liverpool’s 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa in the English Premier League has pushed the team down to fifth place in the standings, with Bournemouth poised to overtake them and potentially cost the club a spot in next season’s Champions League. Manager Arne Slot acknowledged after the match that his side is conceding far too many easy goals, a problem he says has persisted for some time and directly caused their collapse on the pitch.
Slot, whose position has come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks, stated he does not feel the pressure from the loss. He noted that just last Thursday, before the Villa match, he had already been discussing plans for the upcoming season with the club’s owners.
Slot on the defeat and fan support
“It’s not about me, it’s about our disappointment with the result… I spoke about this (his future) yesterday and that’s enough,” Slot said after the game. He added that the team’s focus is now on the upcoming match against Brentford in the final round of the league. “We need to ensure we win back the fans’ support by starting the match strongly and in a good way,” he explained.
“The combination of fan support and a good performance will lead us to what we want to achieve, which is qualification for the Champions League,” Slot continued.
Defensive woes a major concern
Aston Villa scored four goals on the day but could have added more, repeatedly slicing through Liverpool’s defense. Slot admitted this is a major source of concern that has been present for a while. “We have conceded a lot of goals this season, which is hard to believe unless you see it for yourself, and that’s what happened to us today (yesterday) and led to our defeat by that scoreline. Aston Villa were the better team and the match got out of our control,” he said.
“It’s not about me or how frustrated I am, it’s frustrating for everyone—for the players, the coaching staff, and certainly the fans. In football, you can slip (referring to Dominik Szoboszlai’s slip leading to Aston Villa’s second goal), but that’s very unfortunate. We know what we have to do next week,” Slot concluded.
