Tottenham Hotspur is attempting to outmaneuver Manchester United in signing midfielder Mateus Fernandes, who has agreed personal terms with United but faces a high transfer fee.

Manchester United has reportedly secured personal terms with Mateus Fernandes, the 21-year-old midfielder from West Ham United, yet Tottenham Hotspur is actively seeking to disrupt the deal by initiating talks with West Ham.
Earlier this year, Manchester United expressed interest in Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi by contacting his representatives, but Tottenham acted swiftly to sign the free agent after avoiding relegation. United, however, are not focusing on defensive reinforcements this summer, which may explain their lack of urgency in the Senesi pursuit.
Mateus Fernandes has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most well-rounded midfielders during the previous season, demonstrating strength in ball-carrying and precision in passing. His defensive contributions are marked by tenacity and effective positioning.
Simon Rusk, who worked with Fernandes at Southampton, praised the player’s attitude, stating, “He’s got an unbelievably excellent attitude towards becoming better. So he can only use this as being better.”
According to talkSPORT, United is determined to acquire Fernandes despite his experience of consecutive relegations. The outlet’s chief football correspondent, Alex Crook, confirmed, “We know that Manchester United have basically got personal terms already agreed.”
Reports indicate that Tottenham Hotspur has made an inquiry to West Ham regarding Fernandes, aiming to challenge Manchester United’s pursuit. The club’s manager, De Zerbi, has identified Fernandes as a player capable of strengthening Tottenham’s squad, especially after their narrow escape from relegation last season.
West Ham has maintained a firm stance on Fernandes’ valuation, reportedly demanding £80 million. This high asking price presents a significant obstacle for Manchester United.
Should Tottenham be willing to meet West Ham’s valuation and United decline to meet the fee, Fernandes is more likely to transfer from East London to North London rather than to Old Trafford.
