Two Bayern Stars Excel While One Forward Misses Key Opportunities
FC Bayern clinched the Bundesliga and DFB Cup titles, with two players earning top ratings, but one forward failed to capitalize on crucial chances this season.

FC Bayern completed a dominant Bundesliga and DFB Cup double this season, despite a dramatic Champions League semi-final loss to Paris Saint-Germain and a single league defeat against FC Augsburg. The campaign was marked by two standout performers, while a high-profile forward struggled to make an impact.
The club, following a trophy-less 2024 season, maintained its Bundesliga dominance but failed to secure other titles until this recent success. Their strong league performance, combined with the cup victory in Berlin, defined an otherwise impressive year for the record champions.
Goalkeepers' Performances and Defensive Stability
Manuel Neuer, the Munich captain, demonstrated moments of brilliance, notably in the Champions League group stage against PSG and the quarter-final first leg at Real Madrid. However, he also made costly errors, such as in the return leg against Real Madrid. Despite muscle injuries sidelining him for several matches, including the DFB Cup final, Neuer extended his contract after months of speculation and is set to rejoin the national squad for the World Cup. He conceded 40 goals and kept 11 clean sheets, earning a rating of 2.5.
Jonas Urbig, stepping in during Neuer's injuries, delivered solid and occasionally outstanding performances, including games against Eindhoven and Wolfsburg. At 22, he is now considered Bayern's first-choice goalkeeper, with a rating of 2.5 and 21 goals conceded.
Defensively, Dayot Upamecano improved under Vincent Kompany's guidance, overcoming previous mistakes and establishing himself among top centre-backs worldwide. His contract extends until 2030, and he received a rating of 2. Jonathan Tah, a summer signing from Bayer Leverkusen, quickly adapted and led Bayern in clearances and blocks, earning a 2 rating as well.
Min-Jae Kim served as the third-choice centre-back, used mainly as a rotation option in the latter half of the Bundesliga season. The 29-year-old South Korean remained a transfer target, with a rating of 3.5. Hiroki Ito, returning from a metatarsal fracture in November and later missing a month due to a muscle fibre tear, played a limited role and was rated 4.
Midfield and Wing-Back Contributions
Konrad Laimer solidified his importance in his third Bayern season, performing reliably on both flanks and contributing offensively. Contract extension negotiations have been tense due to his reportedly high demands, and he earned a rating of 2. Josip Stanisic complemented Laimer on the opposite flank, showing defensive solidity and consistency, with a rating of 2 despite a few negative moments, including the first leg against PSG.
Alphonso Davies faced a challenging season after returning from a cruciate ligament tear in December, frequently sidelined by injuries, including a current thigh issue that will cause him to miss the World Cup opener. His performances lacked conviction, and he was rated 4.5. Sacha Boey, benefiting from a shortage of wing-back options, started regularly early in the season but did not stand out before returning to Galatasaray on loan. His future remains uncertain, with a rating of 4.
Tom Bischof, a free transfer from TSG Hoffenheim, often played left-back, a position new to him, and showed promise reminiscent of Joshua Kimmich’s career path. The 20-year-old earned a rating of 3.
Joshua Kimmich was the central playmaker in Kompany’s 4-2-3-1 formation, orchestrating Bayern’s play from deep positions and creating offensive opportunities. Despite his high involvement, he failed to influence the Champions League semi-finals against PSG significantly, receiving a rating of 2.
Aleksandar Pavlovic, a 22-year-old academy graduate, regularly started alongside Kimmich in key matches, contributing intelligent and precise passing with a rating of 2.5. Leon Goretzka, after a strong previous season, had a more average year as the third-choice defensive midfielder, playing frequently late in the season and receiving a 3.5 rating. Raphael Guerreiro ended his three-year tenure with a versatile campaign, playing multiple roles and scoring goals, but his contract will not be renewed. He earned a rating of 3.5.
Forward Line: Highs and Lows
Serge Gnabry secured a regular spot behind striker Harry Kane after the summer, earning a contract extension until 2030. However, an adductor injury sidelined him during the crucial season phase, causing him to miss the World Cup. He was rated 2.5.
Jamal Musiala struggled to regain form following a broken fibula in January and a subsequent health setback in March. When given the chance after Gnabry’s injury, Musiala initially impressed but faded during the Champions League semi-finals and DFB-Pokal final, delivering three underwhelming performances and missing key opportunities to salvage the season. His rating was 4.
Michael Olise was recognized as the Bundesliga Player of the Season and is a contender for the Ballon d'Or. The 24-year-old French forward combined flair with effectiveness throughout the campaign, earning a rating of 1.
Luis Diaz, a €70 million signing from Liverpool, brought energy and determination on the left wing. Although his finishing was inconsistent early on, it improved as the season progressed, resulting in a 1.5 rating.
Lennart Karl, aged 17, emerged as a rising and controversial talent, earning multiple Man of the Match awards in the Champions League autumn matches. During the winter break, he expressed ambitions to join Real Madrid and made his German national team debut in March. Following an injury layoff, he returned strongly and secured a World Cup squad spot. Karl is expected to make a significant impact both on and off the field, with a rating of 2.5.
Harry Kane topped the Bundesliga scoring charts, won Europe’s Golden Boot, and scored the decisive goal in the DFB-Pokal final. The 32-year-old English striker also contributed as a playmaker and ball-winner, enjoying the best season of his career, though the ultimate individual award remains elusive. His rating was 1.
Nicolas Jackson, despite scoring every 120 minutes, produced mostly inconsequential goals. Bayern decided against signing the 24-year-old Senegalese forward permanently after a loan from Chelsea, considering the estimated €25 million loan fee and wages unjustified. He received a rating of 4.
Emerging Talents and Squad Depth
Manager Vincent Kompany has promoted several academy players to the first team, including Cassiano Kiala (17), Erblin Osmani (16), Jonah Kusi-Asare (18), Felipe Chavez (19), Filip Pavic (16), David Santos Daiber (19), Maycon Cardozo (17), Wisdom Mike (17), Deniz Ofli (19), and Bara Sapoko Ndiaye (18). Additionally, experienced third-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich (37) was called upon once during the season.
