United target £43m Bundesliga defender Lukeba for 2027 rebuild

A £43 million valuation places RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba at the center of Manchester United’s long-term defensive strategy, according to reports linking the club with the French international. The Red Devils intend to prioritize backline reinforcements in 2027, following significant investments in attacking and midfield units during recent windows.

Defensive overhaul timeline

Observers anticipate that next year will mark the beginning of a comprehensive defensive restructuring for the Premier League side. This shift follows a major offensive refresh completed in summer 2025 and a subsequent midfield reboot earlier this year. The club’s hierarchy aims to address persistent vulnerabilities in their rear guard through targeted acquisitions.

The current squad lacks adequate depth across multiple defensive positions. Although United sought a new left-back this past summer, they failed to secure Lewis Hall, leaving Luke Shaw without a reliable backup. INEOS leadership is expected to correct this oversight, potentially initiating moves as early as January. Additionally, the right-back position requires an upgrade over Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, both of whom hold contracts expiring in June 2028.

Central defense also presents a critical area for improvement. Harry Maguire, who turns 34 in March, may leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season. Consequently, United plan to sign at least one new centre-back to replace him. Samuel Luckhurst of The Sun reported that the club prefers defenders aged between 22 and 26. However, top prospects in this bracket such as Jarrad Branthwaite, Murilly, and Malick Thiaw may prove financially or competitively out of reach.

Lukeba profile and recruitment links

Castello Lukeba emerges as a viable alternative within these parameters. The 23-year-old has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s premier centre-backs. He previously played alongside Benjamin Sesko at Leipzig, a player United already signed. Luckhurst noted that Lukeba fits the club’s “preferred overseas profile.”

Lukeba is a left-footed defender developed through Lyon’s academy system. He transferred to Leipzig in 2023 for €30 million. Transfermarkt currently estimates his market value at €50 million, equivalent to approximately £43 million. Rouven Schroder, Leipzig’s sporting director, praised the defender’s attributes, describing him as “exceptional.”

“His strength in tackles, his good passing, his confidence and composure on the ball, his speed and his flexibility in being able to play both as a centre-back and as a full-back make him an exceptional player,” Schroder stated. These qualities align with United’s need for versatile defensive options.

Manchester United’s internal connections could facilitate negotiations with the German club. Christopher Vivell, the club’s Head of Recruitment, spent several years working within the Red Bull group before joining Carrington. Vivell reportedly played a pivotal role in securing Sesko’s move to United in 2025, suggesting existing channels for potential deals involving Leipzig players.
