USMNT Focuses on World Cup Amid Pochettino-Milan Speculation
USMNT staff and players remain focused on World Cup preparations despite ongoing rumors linking coach Mauricio Pochettino to AC Milan.

USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino and U.S. Soccer officials are concentrating on long-term plans and World Cup preparations despite recent reports linking him to the AC Milan coaching position. The rumors emerged as the team began its World Cup training camp at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Atlanta, where Pochettino met with assistant Jesus Perez, CEO JT Batson, and COO Dan Helfrich to discuss future projects including youth development and coaching education.
Though reports from Italy and confirmations from The Athletic indicated that Pochettino's representatives and AC Milan officials held discussions last week, Pochettino emphasized that his commitment to the USMNT remains firm through the World Cup. He stated, "We are committed to the national team until the World Cup, until we finish the World Cup," acknowledging that while he has met with representatives from various clubs, his focus is entirely on the national team.
U.S. Soccer anticipated such interest given Pochettino's stature as one of the sport's leading coaches. With preseason approaching and his contract set to expire after the World Cup, it was expected that he would consider future options. However, those within the camp, including players and staff, report no disruption to their World Cup preparations.
Coach Addresses Club Interest
Pochettino openly confirmed that his representatives have engaged in conversations with clubs, a normal part of their role, but reiterated that his priority remains the USMNT until at least July. He stressed that any club requiring an immediate start would be met with a refusal, citing respect for his current contract and commitment to the national team.
"If some club came to me and said, 'Mauricio, we want you, but you need to start tomorrow,' I would say, 'Sorry, I am committed to the national team and being the best at the World Cup'," he explained. Pochettino compared this situation to previous experiences at clubs like Tottenham, where he maintained his contractual commitments despite external interest.
Players Unaffected by Coaching Speculation
USMNT players acknowledged the rumors but expressed that their focus remains on the World Cup. Midfielder Tyler Adams noted that contract situations affect both players and coaches, but emphasized that Pochettino is fully engaged in training and team development. Forward Tim Weah echoed this sentiment, highlighting the privilege of being coached by a high-caliber manager and affirming their dedication to the present moment.
"Our focus has to be here on the World Cup," Adams said. "He's fully present with us every single day, finding ways to make us better, focusing on the training just as we are." Weah added, "Whatever he decides to do after us is what the coach decides, and we're here to support him and he's here to support us."
Potential for Pochettino's Continued Tenure
U.S. Soccer CEO JT Batson reflected on Pochettino’s transparency and commitment since their initial meeting in Barcelona in 2024. Batson recalled that despite other offers, Pochettino chose to join U.S. Soccer due to his belief in the federation and the men's national team. Throughout the cycle, Pochettino has been linked to multiple clubs, including Tottenham, Real Madrid, and now AC Milan, with Batson noting that the list of interested parties is even longer.
The contract with Pochettino reportedly offers up to $6 million annually and expires after the World Cup. Both sides have engaged in extensive discussions about a possible extension, contingent on the outcomes of the tournament. Batson emphasized that while they are excited about the future, their immediate focus remains on the summer competition.
U.S. Soccer's Contingency Planning
In addition to preparing for Pochettino's potential departure, U.S. Soccer is managing other staffing changes, including the ongoing search for a new Sporting Director after Matt Crocker’s departure. Batson described monthly meetings dedicated to succession planning across all roles, acknowledging the dynamic nature of the organization as it has expanded in recent years.
"We have plans for renewals, we have plans for interims, and we have plans for replacements," Batson said. "This is just a standard part of us growing up." Pochettino has also participated in long-term discussions about U.S. Soccer's future, including involvement in Olympic programs, youth teams, and coaching education.
Financial Resources and Future Prospects
Batson highlighted the federation’s strengthened financial position, supported by commercial partners, fan engagement, and philanthropic contributions. This financial stability allows U.S. Soccer to make decisions focused on advancing soccer outcomes, regardless of leadership changes. He expressed confidence in the resources available for future projects, including preparations for the 2030 World Cup.
World Cup Preparation Remains Central
While Batson spoke to the media, Pochettino was actively coaching his team during training sessions in Atlanta, emphasizing intensity and focus. The USMNT is scheduled to play two friendlies before the tournament begins on June 12 against Paraguay, facing Senegal and Germany in preparation matches.
Batson described the team’s enthusiasm and dedication, noting their commitment to making the new National Training Center a home. Pochettino reiterated the unique nature of the World Cup, emphasizing the importance of mentality and arrival at the tournament.
"The World Cup is completely different," Pochettino said. "It's about how you arrive. It's about the mentality."
