Xabi Alonso agrees to take over as Chelsea manager
Former Liverpool midfielder and ex-Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is set to become Chelsea's sixth permanent manager under the Boehly-Eghbali ownership, with an announcement possible as early as Sunday.

Xabi Alonso has agreed to become Chelsea's next manager, with the club accelerating talks to finalise the appointment and potentially unveil him as early as Sunday. The former Real Madrid boss, who also played for Liverpool, has been persuaded to take charge at Stamford Bridge ahead of other contenders including Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola, Fulham's Marco Silva, and Oliver Glasner.
The move represents a major coup for Chelsea, as Alonso remains highly regarded among Europe's elite coaching ranks following his successful stint at Bayer Leverkusen. His arrival will mark the sixth permanent manager since Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly took over the club, following Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca, and Liam Rosenior.
Shift in recruitment strategy
Alonso's appointment signals a departure from Chelsea's recent preference for younger, less established managers, suggesting a strategic pivot by the club's hierarchy. The decision comes amid ongoing fan unrest, with supporters staging a 200-strong protest on Wembley Way to voice their discontent with the ownership.
Maresca was dismissed just months after guiding Chelsea to a European trophy, the Champions League, and the Club World Cup. The club had invested heavily in young players on long-term contracts, but that approach has not yielded success this season.
Response to FA Cup disappointment
The breakthrough in negotiations with Alonso follows Chelsea's FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City. The move underscores the club's determination to return to trophy-winning form after a disastrous campaign that culminated in Rosenior's sacking during a poor run of results.
Chelsea now face the real possibility of missing out on Champions League qualification and may not even secure European football for next season. Despite these challenges, the club has pressed ahead with recruiting Alonso in an effort to restore their status among the game's elite.
