Joint Committee from the Litani River Authority and the Ministry of Industry Inspects Slaughterhouses in Badnayl, Identifies Environmental and Operational Violations

Conducted on 1/9/2026 by the joint committee between the National Litani River Authority and the Ministry of Industry, a field inspection was carried out at livestock slaughterhouses in the town of Badnayl – Bint Jbeil district, aiming to verify their legal and operational status, the methodology for treating waste generated by these facilities, and to ensure that blood, residues, and contaminated water are not discharged in ways harming the environment or waterways, as part of ongoing efforts to reduce pollution sources in the Litani River basin and protect its water resources.

The inspections revealed clear disparities among the slaughterhouses, with several observations and violations requiring follow-up:

Youssef Aqil Slaughterhouse: It was found that the slaughterhouse is currently inactive, with a new investor present. The committee requested that investment activities not commence before establishing a wastewater treatment plant; meanwhile, the Ministry of Industry requested the formalization of a new investment contract under the current investor’s name to ensure full compliance with legal and environmental requirements prior to reactivation.

Ali Hassan Ali Hassan Slaughterhouse: It was confirmed that the slaughterhouse is unlicensed and currently inactive in slaughtering operations, according to the owner’s statement, with visible blood traces inside. The owner stated that current activity is limited to purchasing meat, cutting it, and selling it, and sampling was not possible due to the absence of slaughtering during the inspection.

Mohammed Abdou Al-Ramh Slaughterhouse: It was found that the slaughterhouse is unlicensed and continues normal slaughtering and cutting operations despite a prior closure order issued by the Ministry of Industry. A wastewater treatment station exists at the facility, with samples to be taken later to verify the effectiveness of treatment and the quality of discharged water.

Ghayth Ali Hassan Slaughterhouse: It was confirmed that the slaughterhouse is unlicensed and continues operating despite a previous closure order from the Ministry of Industry, with active slaughtering and cutting taking place. Liquid waste from the activity is being discharged into settling pits. Follow-up will include later sampling and evaluation of the quality of the discharged water.

Zaher Aqil Slaughterhouse: It was found that the slaughterhouse is unlicensed and currently inactive, though the owner reported working to complete his file with the Ministry of Industry. A new wastewater treatment station has been established within the facility, which will be verified for readiness and effectiveness through actual operation and sampling before allowing resumption of activity in accordance with regulations.

Abbas Tawfic Suleiman Slaughterhouse: It was confirmed that the slaughterhouse is licensed and equipped with a wastewater treatment station, with treated water discharged into the sewage network. Solid waste is transported to the Zahle landfill. The committee requested that the owner seal an existing outlet from the treatment plant’s pipes to prevent any potential unauthorized discharge.

The National Litani River Authority emphasized that the inspection process goes beyond documenting violations—it aims to ensure that pollution sources are eliminated and waste is properly treated before discharge. Field follow-up and sampling will continue at active slaughterhouses or upon resumption of operations at previously suspended facilities, with necessary laboratory analyses conducted to verify whether discharged water meets established environmental standards.
