Lebanon-Israel Pentagon Talks Yield No Breakthrough Amid Southern Clashes
Military talks between Lebanon and Israel at the Pentagon ended without progress while heavy fighting continues in southern Lebanon.

On Friday, Lebanon and Israel held military discussions at the Pentagon under U.S. sponsorship, coinciding with intense fighting in southern Lebanon. However, these meetings did not produce any tangible results or breakthroughs in the ongoing crisis.
Lebanon's primary demand to establish a ceasefire or secure the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied southern villages and towns was not met.
Elbridge Colby, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Policy, described the talks between Lebanese and Israeli military officials as "productive" and said they would support the political process led by the U.S. State Department next week. He reaffirmed U.S. backing for Lebanon's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and freedom from non-state armed groups, and expressed Washington’s anticipation of a forthcoming meeting to continue the security dialogue.
A Lebanese military source stated that the meeting failed to achieve any practical outcomes as Lebanon had hoped. The source highlighted ongoing Israeli escalation in southern Lebanon, with military operations expanding beyond the so-called "yellow line" and Israeli forces approaching the city of Nabatieh, raising concerns about the widening scope of the confrontations.
The source detailed Israeli advances along three main axes in the south:
- The southern outskirts of the town of Zoutar al-Sharqi north of the Litani River.
- The southern outskirts of the town of Yahmour.
- The southern outskirts of the Dabbine-Blat axis in the eastern sector.
Additionally, the source noted that the strategic Shaqif Castle in the town of Arnoun, overlooking the Litani River, the Marjeyoun plain, and the Nabatieh region, is under heavy Israeli attack. Ongoing clashes between the Israeli army and Hezbollah fighters continue, but the site has not yet fallen under Israeli control.
The source explained that Hezbollah is engaged in multiple combat operations, inflicting losses on Israeli forces. Nonetheless, Israeli advances continue daily beyond the yellow line. Meanwhile, the Lebanese army maintains a deployment of approximately seven thousand soldiers across southern areas, covering towns distributed between the northern and southern banks of the Litani River.
Security tensions persisted in southern Lebanon on Saturday, with an Israeli drone targeting a pickup truck on the Haboush–Deir al-Zahrani road in the Nabatieh area. Three individuals were injured in an airstrike near Nabatieh Hospital.
