Prisoners' Strike at Roumieh Prison Enters Ninth Day Amid Escalation

Entered a new phase of field and political escalation, the prisoners' strike at Roumieh Central Prison has continued for nine consecutive days without food or medicine.

This determination inside the cells coincided with a significant demonstration in the Lebanese streets, marked by a large sit-in held at "Nur Square" (Abd al-Hamid Karami) in Tripoli on Sunday.

The Tripoli protest was called by the "Committee of Prisoners' Families," drawing a crowd of northern residents expressing outrage over the suspension of the general amnesty law.

During speeches delivered by various political, religious, civil, and human rights figures, participants raised slogans condemning the appeal filed against the law before the Constitutional Council, holding those behind it directly responsible for delays and deteriorating humanitarian conditions within prisons.

Demonstrators declared from the heart of Nur Square that the amnesty file could no longer withstand further delay, warning that the street would not wait long and might precede slow political or judicial solutions. They urged relevant authorities to take responsibility and swiftly decide on this matter.

Meanwhile, the health condition of hunger-striking prisoners inside building "B" of Roumieh Prison continues to deteriorate, with some inmates resorting to extreme measures such as sewing their mouths shut and refusing medical treatment. Human rights sources monitoring the situation warn of catastrophic consequences should prisoners continue their "battle of empty stomachs," especially given inadequate medical care and overcrowding among detainees.
