Public Works Ministry: We Will Not Tolerate Any Negligence in Al-Makhlis

Announced the Ministry of Public Works and Transport that "it had begun, well in advance of the rainy season, preparatory efforts including cleaning and clearing drains and stormwater runoff channels, removing dust and debris from sensitive locations, as well as monitoring historically water-accumulating points and implementing possible preventive measures within the scope of roads and facilities under its responsibility," noting that "these operations continued at an intensified pace over recent weeks, enhancing the readiness of drainage networks and field response teams to address any developments arising from heavy rainfall."

In a statement, it clarified that "with the occurrence of heavy, concentrated rainfall over short periods this morning, the situation was monitored on-site with high readiness and rapid response, deploying its technical teams, maintenance workshops, and machinery. Several locations experienced temporary water pooling due to rainfall intensity; specialized teams intervened where necessary to clean catch basins, clear drainage channels, and remove obstructions and accumulations, while in other areas, water receded immediately after rainfall decreased, contributing to the restoration of normal traffic flow."

The ministry pointed out that "in the Al-Makhlis area, the flow of water carrying large amounts of dust and gravel from Al-Mansourieh led to accumulation inside catch basins and drainage channels, directly impairing their capacity to handle water and causing pooling on roads and intersections. Immediately, ministry teams and specialized equipment were deployed to remove accumulations, clean catch basins, reopen drainage channels, and restore normal traffic flow. Preliminary findings following investigation revealed that the contractor responsible for works in Al-Mansourieh had left work sites and equipment open without implementing required protective and precautionary measures during execution, allowing dust and construction debris to be carried toward low-lying areas and drainage networks."

It stressed that "it will not tolerate any such negligence or omission, and will address it with full seriousness and firmness, taking all necessary actions against the mentioned contractor according to established procedures based on final technical investigation results," confirming that "immediate steps have been taken to prevent recurrence at the mentioned site."

The ministry also noted that "some of the water pooling images and videos circulating today are located on roads or within drainage networks managed by local authorities or other departments," stating: "Conversely, the ministry continues coordinating with municipalities, agencies, and relevant bodies wherever flash floods intersect with roads under its jurisdiction, ensuring swift response and public safety," reaffirming that "Ministry of Public Works and Transport teams and workshops remain on high alert with continuous on-site monitoring throughout the weather period."
