Dr. Gavin Ashenden, former chaplain to Queen Elizabeth, criticizes King Charles for falling short in his role and departing from traditional monarchy values.

Dr. Gavin Ashenden, who served as an honorary chaplain to Queen Elizabeth from 2008 to 2017, has expressed sharp criticism of King Charles’ performance as monarch, suggesting it would disappoint the late Queen.
On The Karl Stefanovic Show, Ashenden highlighted significant shortcomings in the King’s approach to his duties, particularly noting his departure from the traditional title “Defender of the Faith,” a role linked to British monarchs since the 16th century.
Ashenden described King Charles as “a woke King” who fails to recognize the risks associated with adopting a more modern and lenient stance, which he believes undermines the monarchy and British societal values.
He elaborated, “Evidently, we have a woke King. Coincidentally, we have a King who can’t think straight despite having had the best possible education.” Ashenden emphasized that the King’s intention to “protect the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation” lacks historical precedent and is misguided, comparing him to “a blind and deaf lion tamer, who can’t see things are quite dangerous.”
In contrast, Ashenden praised Queen Elizabeth’s reign, describing her as “a very intelligent, alert woman, full of integrity.” When asked how the Queen might view King Charles’ reign if she were alive, he responded, “I think she would know it’s a disaster.”
He concluded that King Charles is “falling short of what’s expected of a King,” criticizing his more open-minded decisions as weakening his control over the monarchy.
