Lawrence shuts down Mystique return with blunt quote
Jennifer Lawrence firmly rejected returning as Mystique, citing the grueling prosthetic process and permanent hair damage.

A definitive refusal marks Jennifer Lawrence’s stance on revisiting her role as Raven Darkholme, known as Mystique, within any future Marvel Cinematic Universe or X-Men productions. The Oscar-winning actress expressed no desire to reprise the character, despite having portrayed her four times between 2011 and 2019 across films including X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past, Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix.
Blunt rejection of prosthetics
In a recent conversation with Allure, Lawrence addressed whether she would consider heavy prosthetic work again. Her response was immediate and emphatic: “Never say never, but absolutely fucking not.” She detailed the physical toll, noting that airbrushing is extremely cold and that she is ticklish. The experience taught her how little sleep she could function on and what happens to the human mind when pushed to its breaking point, adding patience to the list of required virtues.
Past comments on makeup struggles
This sentiment aligns with previous remarks where Lawrence criticized the lengthy transformation process. During an actress roundtable in December 2025 alongside Cynthia Erivo, who underwent green makeup for Wicked, Lawrence touched on these challenges. Earlier, around the 2014 release of Days of Future Past, she discussed the discomfort of sitting on a “bicycle seat” during makeup application while appearing on the Tonight Show.
Stunts versus paint
Lawrence highlighted stunts and movement training as the most enjoyable aspects of the role, praising stunt double Renee Moneymaker, who also performed action sequences for Katniss in The Hunger Games. Conversely, she identified the paint as her least favorite element. On the Call Her Daddy podcast, she reiterated that the process took eight hours each time, describing it as ticklish due to the extensive body paint and glue involved.
Permanent hair damage
The preparation phase presented additional difficulties, specifically requiring her to dye her hair multiple colors in a single day. This intense regimen resulted in permanent damage to her hair, further cementing her reluctance to undergo such transformations again.
