Nicholas Cage disclosed that declining certain film roles caused professional tensions with Hollywood directors, including Christopher Nolan.

Nicholas Cage has revealed a lesser-known aspect of his acting career, explaining that his refusal to participate in some films led to strained professional relationships with Hollywood directors, notably Christopher Nolan.
In an interview with The New York Times, Cage stated that some directors do not accept an actor’s apology for declining their projects, which sometimes results in a complete breakdown of communication between them.
The American actor pointed out that in 2002 he turned down a role in the film Insomnia, which starred Al Pacino and Robin Williams, and confirmed that his professional relationship with Nolan ended following that decision.
Cage added that similar situations occurred with other directors, including Paul Thomas Anderson and Woody Allen, noting that some do not resume contact after an actor refuses any film project.
On the other hand, Cage praised director David O. Russell as an exception, explaining that Russell reestablished contact with him despite a previous refusal and later offered him a role in the film Madden, where Cage portrays the famous American football coach John Madden.
Nicholas Cage affirmed that David O. Russell’s behavior demonstrates a high level of professionalism and artistic appreciation, expressing his great respect for the director and his desire to continue collaborating with him in the future.
