Backrooms Breaks A24's Opening Day Record with $38 Million
Backrooms earned $38 million on its opening day, surpassing A24's previous record and is projected to reach $90 million in its first weekend.

On its debut day, Backrooms generated $38 million in box office revenue, including $10.4 million from Thursday night previews, setting a new opening day record for film studio A24.
The horror film, directed by Kane Parsons who was 19 during production and is now 20, explores a mysterious doorway in a furniture showroom basement that leads to an endless maze of disorienting rooms.
Leading the cast are Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, with Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell also featured. The movie is adapted from Parsons’ viral YouTube series Backrooms, known for its unsettling liminal space horror theme.
This opening day performance surpasses A24’s previous record held by the 2024 release Civil War, which earned $25.5 million on its first day. Backrooms is expected to exceed the studio’s highest domestic gross, Marty Supreme, which made $96 million during its run.
Industry estimates from Variety project that Backrooms will earn between $85 million and $90 million over its opening weekend, potentially surpassing Marty Supreme within four or five days of release.
Critics’ reviews and discussions about the director’s background are currently circulating as the film continues its theatrical run.
