As Spain endures severe climate shocks and consecutive record-breaking heatwaves, the city of Barcelona has adopted technological measures to safeguard outdoor workers beyond traditional provisions like water and sun umbrellas. The city has started distributing advanced smart bracelets to employees working in open-air environments, serving as an early warning system that intervenes seconds before a potential health crisis.

This exceptional initiative follows alarming reports revealing over 1,000 excess deaths during June alone, attributed to the extreme temperature rise affecting the country.

Technology to Protect Workers in Extreme Heat

Barcelona has handed out approximately 1,400 smart bracelets to workers most vulnerable to the intense sun exposure and physical exertion required by their jobs outdoors. The recipients include street and public square cleaners, lighting and electrical network maintenance teams, public garden and park workers, and waste management personnel.

The bracelets function with high precision, continuously monitoring the wearer’s body temperature and vital signs in real time. When the device detects a critical rise in body temperature that poses an imminent life threat—such as the onset of a fatal heatstroke—it immediately emits strong vibrations and sharp alarm sounds. At that moment, safety protocols require the worker to stop their task immediately and seek the nearest shaded area.

These stringent measures come after Spain experienced tragic incidents in recent years where several street workers died on the job due to excessive heat stress. Such events sparked public outrage and compelled authorities to overhaul work patterns and conditions.

Pep Limona, the prevention coordinator in Barcelona’s Parks and Gardens Department, told local media that the smart bracelets are part of a comprehensive plan to adapt to a climate crisis that has become "severe and alarmingly escalating."

Heatwave Severity and Forecast

Complicating the situation further, Spain’s meteorological agency announced that last June was the second hottest month on record since climate data collection began in the country. It also confirmed that Spanish cities are preparing for a second, more intense heatwave expected to start early next week. In this context, the smart bracelets represent the final barrier protecting workers from silent death under the sun’s rays.
