A California man is accused of stealing $34,000 in Lego sets by replacing valuable pieces with dry pasta before returning them.

An unusual theft scheme targeting popular Lego toys has cost Target stores in the United States roughly $34,000. The alleged culprit would swap valuable pieces inside the boxes with dry linguine pasta before returning them to the shelves.
Police in Irvine, California, announced the arrest of a 28-year-old man named Gareil Augustine, a resident of Paramount, linking him to approximately 70 theft incidents at Target stores nationwide. Augustine’s organized method involved purchasing expensive Lego sets, emptying them of mini-figures and valuable components, and then filling the boxes with dry linguine pasta. This was done to fool store employees into thinking the weight was unchanged when he returned the items for a refund.
Surveillance footage captured the suspect pulling toy sets from shelves, and investigators used those recordings to track him down and identify him. According to law enforcement records, Augustine was booked into the Orange County Jail on charges of grand theft.
Photos released by the police show massive quantities of stolen pieces and hundreds of small figures that were seized, alongside bags of the pasta used for camouflage. The police department commented on the case with a touch of humor on social media, warning that any plan involving swapping toys for pasta would end in failure.
The case has drawn widespread attention due to the unusual method used to defraud the store's return system, according to the Independent.
