Marvel’s Wolverine moved 1.9 million copies and earned approximately $130 million in revenue during its first three days on sale, according to Alinea Analytics. The game launched exclusively for PlayStation 5 on September 15 and has become Sony’s top-performing first-party title of 2026 — despite a Metascore of 77, the lowest among all PS5-exclusive Sony releases to date.

Mixed critical reception, robust commercial performance

Reviewers highlighted a linear narrative structure, repetitive combat systems, and gameplay mechanics perceived as outdated by roughly ten years. Still, those critiques did not hinder sales: Wolverine outsold Death Stranding 2 at the same point in its lifecycle. Hideo Kojima’s title had shifted 1.8 million units and generated $129 million in revenue by comparison — falling short of Wolverine on both metrics.

Insomniac Games’ other 2026 releases trailed significantly. MLB The Show 26 achieved $99 million in revenue and 1.5 million PS5 copies sold. Marathon, released across all platforms, reached $60 million and 1.8 million units. Neither matched Wolverine’s opening figures.

Geographic distribution and pricing disparities

U.S. consumers accounted for 53% of total sales — consistent with Marvel’s entrenched presence in American popular culture. The United Kingdom represented 7% of sales, France 5%, and Canada 4%, per Insider Gaming. In the UK, the game retails at £93.62 — a 33.8% premium over its $70 U.S. price point, one of the largest regional price gaps globally, attributed primarily to VAT and retail strategy.

Physical sales contributed 22.9% of Wolverine’s total revenue. That share holds notable weight in 2026, as Sony continues advancing disc-free hardware configurations — underscoring ongoing demand from retail gift buyers and physical collectors.

Long-term sales outlook

Alinea analyst Rhys Elliott stated that Wolverine’s long-term sales trajectory is unlikely to mirror that of Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man. However, he identified two possible catalysts for sustained momentum: forthcoming X-Men-related media projects that may reinvigorate interest in the intellectual property, and an anticipated influx of new PS5 owners coinciding with the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Should either factor materialize, Wolverine’s post-launch sales could extend well beyond its initial window.
