Sony Unveils Pulse Edge with 8-Magnet Planar Drivers and ANC

Sony has revealed two new wireless headsets under the PlayStation brand: the Pulse and the Pulse Edge. Both models feature updated planar magnetic drivers and AI-powered microphones for background noise rejection. The Pulse Edge serves as the flagship variant, incorporating Active Noise Cancellation, a detachable boom microphone, and a dedicated game/chat balance dial.

Driver configuration and audio architecture

The Pulse Edge uses 8 magnets per side in its planar magnetic driver—double the count found in the base Pulse model, which employs 4 magnets per driver. Sony states this design delivers more powerful and controlled bass response. Both headsets support dual connectivity: Bluetooth and PlayStation Link, the latter enabled via a USB-C adapter that promises lossless, low-latency audio specifically for PS5 users.

Design and compatibility

Ear cups on both headsets rotate flat to facilitate easier storage and transport. Each is offered in White and Midnight Black finishes. The standard Pulse maintains broad platform compatibility, working with PS5, PC, Mac, and the PlayStation Portal handheld. The Pulse Edge adds a 3.5 mm analog jack and ships with a hard carrying case.

Availability and pricing uncertainty

No pricing has been confirmed for either headset. For reference, the prior-generation Pulse Elite launched at $149.99 in the US and £129.99 in the UK. Sony expects the Pulse Edge—given its ANC, enhanced driver setup, and additional features—to retail above that benchmark, though no figures have been disclosed. The base Pulse is scheduled for release in “select markets” during the 2026 holiday season; the Pulse Edge will follow in early 2027. Pre-order information will be shared closer to launch, according to the PlayStation Blog.

Competitive positioning and unanswered specs

The Pulse Edge enters a competitive segment occupied by models such as the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro and HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless—both of which already offer ANC and publicly listed pricing. While PlayStation Link provides a low-latency advantage for PS5 users, Sony notes most gamers may not perceive a meaningful difference compared to high-quality Bluetooth connections. Battery life—a critical specification for wireless headsets—has not yet been released for either model. Sony is withholding key performance metrics, leaving value assessment contingent on data it has not provided.
