Coco Gauff Opens Roland Garros Title Defense with Win Over Townsend
Coco Gauff overcame a slow start to defeat Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-0 in the first round of the French Open title defense.

American Coco Gauff, the reigning French Open champion, recovered from a sluggish beginning to secure a 6-4, 6-0 victory against fellow American Taylor Townsend on Tuesday, marking a strong start to her campaign to defend the title.
Under the sun at the Philippe Chatrier court, Gauff initially struggled to find her rhythm and came within a point of losing her serve twice to Townsend.
However, the fourth seed quickly regained her composure, took control of the match, and advanced to the second round.
During the first set, Gauff committed a double fault on the set point with the score at 5-3 in her favor but broke Townsend’s serve in the following game to close out the set.
From that moment, the match shifted decisively in Gauff’s favor as she surged toward victory.
Reflecting on her performance, Gauff, who defeated Aryna Sabalenka in last year’s final, said, "I have many great memories on this court. I was a little nervous today and it showed a bit, but I managed to calm myself down."
